When Dr. Santiago Rodriguez set out to make the world’s best Aloe vera, his travels took him to Hainan Island in the South China Sea where he found the perfect conditions for growing the perfect Aloe vera.  Having revolutionized commercial Aloe vera farming and processing throughout his career, Dr. Rodriguez was ready to raise the bar to a new level. With his extensive knowledge and experience in organic farming and processing, and exceptional quality control skills, he knew this was the location to set-up production of what would result in the perfection of Aloe vera processing known as BiAloe®.

THE LOCATION

The production of BiAloe®, the perfect Aloe vera, started with the selection of the perfect location with ideal growing and farming conditions. Dr. Rodriguez selected the hot and humid climate of the tropical volcanic island of Hainan in the South China Sea, where Mother Nature pours an average of 70 inches of rain a year. There are never any freezes on the island and the entire island is of volcanic origin, so the soil is very rich in minerals which provide optimal nutrition to the plant.  Plus, all of our farms are inland in Haikou, not in the immediate coastal area, away from harms way in case of typhoon. That said, no major typhoon has hit Haikou because the coastal area of Haikou is facing to the North towards mainland China. Also, Hainan is not in an earthquake prone area. No major earthquake has ever been reported in history, and if there is a place on earth with a long history, this is China! The rich volcanic soil of our farms combined with optimum weather conditions in terms of temperature and precipitation result in an Aloe vera plant that embodies proper macro and micro nutrition.

ORGANIC FARMING AND HARVESTING

Lorand Labs employs certified organic farming methods to produce the best Aloe vera in the world, starting with the Aloe itself. While there are about 400 different Aloe species, only one has been used for thousands of years and studied for its many health benefits: Aloe vera Linnaeus (Aloe barbadensis miller). No synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides are used in the farming of BiAloe®. Plus, our Organic Farmers carefully tend to nearly everything by hand, including harvesting which begins in the early morning hours when the sun has yet to rise:

• Leaves are harvested carefully to avoid injury to the plant and to the leaves
• Leaves are placed carefully on baskets to avoid injury
• Leaves are transported immediately to manufacturing facility to be processed that same morning guaranteeing the highest potency, purity and freshness

ORGANIC PROCESSING

Lorand Labs produces BiAloe® using the proprietary processing and freeze drying techniques developed and overseen by our founder, Dr. Rodriguez. Other companies delay processing for days or weeks after harvesting and then use heat, enzymes, and preservatives causing their Aloe to further degrade, diminish potency and even become toxic. Lorand Labs takes great care in leading the industry in protecting our precious Aloe vera during processing to preserve the natural goodness and healing properties. Our goal is to keep intact the perfection that nature has created in our Aloe vera.  Other companies pride themselves on producing Aloe that fits into a molecular weight range that suits their processing capabilities. BiAloe®, on the other hand, has a molecular weight range that is identical to natural Aloe vera of approximately 5 million to 3 thousand Dalton. Lorand Laboratories does not change what nature has created!

• Manufacturing is done under strict organic guidelines
• No harmful chemicals are used for cleaning
• No chance of contamination with residual cleaning agents

• Leaves arrive and they are weighed and cleaned in a washing train using organic approved disinfectants
• Leaves are peeled to remove rind.
• The resulting aloe fillets are ground.
• The liquid Aloe is filtered to remove pulp
• The filtered Aloe is flash pasteurized (Microbiology control step)
• The pasteurized Aloe is sent to the membrane filtration system where the water is partially removed and the Aloe solids become concentrated.
• BiAloe® is not concentrated using high temperature systems that might seriously compromise its bio-activity.
• BiAloe® is not concentrated using alcohol precipitation either, where bio-availability might also be compromised since it is difficult to re-hydrate the precipitated carbohydrate.
• The concentrated Aloe is placed on trays and frozen.
• This step is done in a controlled environment to prevent microbial contamination.
• The frozen aloe concentrate on the trays is placed on the freeze drier for drying.
• Freeze drying allows the removal of the water under vacuum at very low temperatures, allowing the Bio-components to remain unharmed. Furthermore, since the mobility of the molecules in the crystalline structure of the ice is minimal, the water is removed without affecting the space conformation of the molecules in the original solution. This cannot be achieved when other methods of drying are used, such as low temperature vacuum ovens, since upon drying the solution becomes more and more concentrated, and then the bio-molecules change conformation like in the case of alcohol precipitation. This affects biological activity.
• The dry cake is ground, and then weighed and packed.

PACKAGING

Once our world’s best Aloe vera is farmed, harvested, and processed, it must be properly packaged to preserve the perfection that we call BiAloe®. We have developed a double layer oxygen and UV barrier package to preserve the integrity and quality from the minute it leaves our facilities all the way to you – our valued customer. BiAloe® is packaged in 1Kg packs to allow the use of only what is needed for your production run, preserving freshness, preventing waste and the need to reseal unused raw material.

QUALITY CONTROL

Throughout the production and processing of BiAloe®, Lorand Laboratories takes great care and leads the industry in protecting its Aloe vera from microbial attack. Lorand’s system uses high temperature short time pasteurization, which employs heat to kill the bio-burden, but for a short enough period of time to prevent damage to the structures of the Aloe components.  Lorand’s process also ensures that there are no toxins left behind that can cause allergic reactions or undesirable immune system stimulation.

Dr. Santiago Rodriguez is renowned as the foremost expert in the world on Aloe vera processing. He is credited with revolutionizing commercial Aloe vera farming and processing by doing pilot and scale-up production of Manapol® while at Carrington Laboratories. As a consultant, he has helped numerous Aloe companies to increase efficiency and to produce better Aloe. Now, as the founder of Lorand Labs, he has again revolutionized Aloe vera with the production of BiAloe®, the most biologically active Aloe vera available.

While earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Texas, Dr. Rodriguez worked with several notable companies in Costa Rica and the United States. He then spent 10 years with Carrington Laboratories where he isolated and produced a pilot scale intravenous drug using complex carbohydrates from Aloe vera. As a result of his successes with Carrington Laboratories, Dr. Rodriguez was reassigned to Costa Rica to design and install a complete production and packaging line. He conceived and implemented process design, orchestrated procurement of equipment, supervised building remodeling and redesign, equipment installation, process start-up and process controls for the production of Manapol®. As the CEO of the Costa Rican subsidiary of Carrington Labs, Dr. Rodriguez supervised 250 people and oversaw every aspect of farming and production. He also gave Carrington Labs two additional patents for novel Aloe vera products and their processes.

When Dr. Rodriguez left Carrington Labs he worked as an independent consultant. His dream was to produce the finest Aloe vera in the World. His work eventually led him to the volcanic island of Hainan. Dr. Rodriguez saw that Hainan offered perfect conditions for growing the best Aloe vera in the world. After several years of work, his creativity and astute attention to detail enabled him to unlock the secret to an Aloe vera processing system that was truly unique. It left the best of nature intact while improving upon the bio-availability and immunomodulatory functions of Aloe. His years of passion and dedication culminated when he perfected the process that resulted in the creation of BiAloe®, with the most bio-available Acemannan on the market today, and truly the perfection of Aloe vera processing.
